DESIGN CONCEPT
This project demonstrates how a historic domestic structure can be sensitively transformed into a contemporary retail destination, while preserving its cultural memory and architectural identity. Rather than replacing the existing building, the design extends the life of a pre-Independence Bengali family home, through careful restoration, strategic interventions, and the integration of modern services.
The original street-facing character, intimate garden, verandas, cast iron railings, terrazzo and oxide floors are retained and elevated, as key elements of the retail experience. Spatial modifications such as selective wall removal and widened openings transform the previously cellular domestic layout into a fluid and transparent environment, while maintaining the warmth and intimacy of the original home. The project creates a meaningful dialogue between old and new, where heritage elements, contemporary retail requirements, and sustainable practices coexist. By preserving the existing structure significantly, this serves as an example of responsible urban renewal and adaptive reuse.
