NAME
Secondary School, Paratal
LOCATION
Paratal near Kolkata, West Bengal
AREA
10,000 sft.
PROJECT DURATION
2015-onwards
TEAM
Animesh Nayak, Roshan George, Shachi Chandra
DESIGN CONCEPT
An existing, motley mix of rudimentary school classrooms is replaced by a handsome, consolidated school building, built in three parts that together with the existing temple, encircles a secure and serene inner courtyard. The khaki painted external facade, coupled with the locally woven bamboo screens is an attempt to allow this somewhat larger structure to blend into the more intimately scale rural landscape.
MATERIAL PALETTE
  • Khakhi painted, plastered external walls
  • External walls are complemented by floor height woven bamboo screens and brick “jaalis”
  • Pergolas in exposed concrete
  • Wood batten shutters in cheerful colors to complement the khakhi of the facade.
